Course/Activity Information

Sleep and the challenges posed on it changes across the lifespan.  This event will include presentations from four researchers whose research focuses on the sleep of people at particular times of life.

Dimple Goel is a neonatologist and sleep physician at Perth Children’s Hospital.  Dimple’s research focuses on improving outcomes of infants with sleep Pierre Robin Sequence by improving diagnostic methods for obstructive sleep apnoea.  Dimple will talk about the challenges of assessing and monitoring disease severity in neonates and infants and present some innovative advances in this area.

Cele Richardson is a clinical psychologist and NHMRC Emerging Leadership researcher in the school of Psychological Science at UWA.  Cele will speak about the challenges of sleep which are unique to the adolescent population and her research focusing on improving sleep and mental health in adolescents.

Nigel McArdle is a respiratory & sleep physician at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.  Nigel’s research interests include the epidemiology of obstructive sleep apnoea and cardiovascular sequelae of untreated OSA.  Nigel will present current prevalence rates for a number of sleep disorders in young- and middle-aged adults and discuss recent advances in understanding of the links between sleep and sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease.

 

Stephanie Rainey-Smith is a neuroscientist and NHMRC Emerging Leadership at Murdoch University where she leads the Lifestyle Approaches Towards Cognitive Health (LATCH) Research Group. Her research focuses on investigating modifiable risk factors, including sleep, for optimising healthy brain ageing.  Stephanie will talk about the potential for sleep optimisation to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease in the older adult population.
